Norman Crump
Oil Painter

Norman Crump is best known for his use of vibrant color and dramatic light. Through his many years of painting the New England coastline and landscape he has continued to refine his craft.  Working primarily in oil, Norman's paintings are sought after and commissioned by numerous corporate and private collectors internationally and throughout the United States.

He attended Vesper George School of Art for several years before setting out, by foot across the United States to experience art itself.  Norman's years of travel back and forth across the country with his sketchbook, paints, and his dog Pete have given him a unique appreciation of the nuances of light and color in nature.  In the 1970's, Norman and several other local artists opened a large studio in South Boston.  In that space he was finally able to work on large abstracts and landscapes, using the painting sketches from his travels.

In 1980 Norman moved his family to Thompson's Island in Boston Harbor so that he could be near the waterfront he loved. Even while spending long hours as the ferry captain from the island to the mainland, Norman still found time to study and paint the Boston Harbor, surrounding islands and city landscapes.  He even tried his hand at earth art.  To celebrate Thompson Islands 150 Anniversary Year, and raise the awarness of the ongoing polution of Boston Harbor, Norman was contracted to create a giant work of art on the north end of the island closest to the mouth of the harbor.  Using a meadow for his "canvas" and a tractor as his "brush" he created a hawk in flight with the wing span of a football field.

During his ten years on the island, Norman's passion for his craft became so great that in 1996 he left the island to establish a home studio in South Boston and to pursue a full-time career in painting.  A series of successful one-man studio shows led Norman to open a store-front studio/gallery in South Boston in 1998.  At that time it was one of Boston's only artist owned galleries.

The gallery became an instant success, and soon Norman was displaying the work of other artists as well.  In the fall of 2003, Norman entered into a partnership with another local artist and opened a gallery located in the New Seaport District at the World Trade Center. Norman enjoyed success with the gallery for many years, but in the spring of 2008 decided to close that retail space in order to pursue his true passion, plein-air painting.

After a little over a year of working out of his home studion Norman Crump is working out of a studio/gallery again - this time at 551 East Broadway in South Boston.  It's a great location - stop by soon.

Norman is the co-founder and charter member of the South Boston Art Association and continues to be an inspiration to many emerging artists throughout the area. You may run across him on location throughout Greater Boston or in the new Sudio/Gallery.
